Pacific Motorway (M1) – Pimpama (Exit 49) upgrade
Pacific Motorway (M1) – Pimpama (Exit 49) upgrade
Update: July 2024
With three of the planned closures now complete, the project is working towards the second eastern interchange weekend closure. During these works, the eastern roundabout will be removed, with the new signalised intersections opening to traffic on the eastern side (Attenborough Boulevard and Yawalpah Road).
Seymour Whyte had previously advised the community that the second closure of the eastern side of the interchange would occur in late July. Due to recent ongoing inclement weather and other construction conditions beyond the project’s control, the second planned closure on the eastern side has been delayed and will now occur from 8pm Friday, 6 September to 5am Monday, 9 September 2024.
The project will advise the local community who are registered to receive updates via email as well as key business stakeholders within the Pimpama 7-11 service station and retail/health precinct.
The wider Pimpama community will be advised of the new date via letter box flyer closer to the date of the closure.
For further information on these works, please contact the project team at Seymour Whyte via phone on 1800 317 373 or via email atexit49.community@seymourwhyte.com.au
Update: June 2024
Exit 49 interchange weekend closure – Eastern (Yawalpah Road) side
Background
As part of the Pimpama (Exit 49) upgrade, the off and on-ramps are being relocated away from the main interchange, with new signalised intersections being constructed to manage the flow of traffic on and off the ramps and through the interchange.
During the upgrade, the project has maintained traffic movements around the works zones to ensure connectivity for motorists around this busy interchange.
However, major road construction works are occurring to create new signalised intersections where the two roundabouts (east and west of the bridge) are currently located. To carry out these works, weekend closures on each side of the interchange are required.
Eastern closure
Weekend closures will now occur on the eastern side of the interchange:
- From 8pm Friday, 14 June to 5am Monday, 17 June 2024.
- And from 8pm Friday, 26 July to 5am Monday, 29 July 2024.
During these weekend closures, the eastern (Yawalpah Road) side of the interchange will be closed. This includes the closure of:
- the eastern roundabout area
- southbound off-ramp and on-ramp for the first closure
- the southbound off-ramp for the second closure (the new southbound on-ramp will be open for the second closure)
- M1 overpass bridges, with no east/west connectivity available both weekends.
These works are required to safely install asphalt, kerbing, traffic signals, line marking and associated road construction activities.
What to expect
Motorists
Detours will be in place for motorists. This includes detours for those who want to:
- Access areas on the eastern side of the interchange via Coomera (Exit 54), Old Pacific Motorway onto Yawalpah Road and the local road network
- access the M1 southbound or Pimpama local areas via Ormeau (Exit 45).
Please note:
- All roads on the western (Rifle Range Road) side of the interchange and all M1 northbound ramps will remain open during the eastern side closures.
Signage will be in place for motorists. We apologise for the unavoidable longer than normal travel routes required during these important weekends of road construction works. To minimise delays, please plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
Pedestrians and bike riders
Access for pedestrians and bike riders will be maintained around the interchange, including across the overpass bridge. Signage will be in place.
Local residents and businesses
Access into and out of the Pimpama 7-11 service station and retail/health precinct will be maintained.
However, as the eastern roundabout and the top of Attenborough Boulevard and Yawalpah Road will be closed, access during the weekend closures will change.
- Entry and exit will be via the Attenborough Boulevard driveway only, with local access conditions for service station and health/retail customers.
Locals should expect:
- Continuous 24-hour works from 8pm Friday to 5am Monday on both weekends
- Noise, some increased levels of dust and low-level vibration from heavy machinery
- To ensure safety, mobile lighting towers will be used at night to light the works zones, which may create some local light spill. Flashing roof lights and audible reversing alarms will be used on vehicles and machinery for safety reasons.
- On completion of the second weekend closure, all new infrastructure on the eastern side will open to traffic. This includes the upgraded southbound off-ramp and the new signalised intersection where the eastern roundabout is currently located.
Please note – should inclement weather or other construction conditions cause these works to be postponed, they will move to the next suitable weekend. Check electronic signage along the project alignment for updates or contact the project team.
Western closure update
With the first western closure now complete, the second western closure will occur from 8pm Friday, 28 June to 5am Monday, 1 July 2024.
Update: May 2024
Exit 49 interchange weekend closure – western side (Rifle Range Road)
However, major road construction works will shortly occur to create new signalised intersections where the two roundabouts (east and west of the bridge) are currently located.
To carry out these works, weekend closures on each side of the interchange will be required.
Weekend western closures
Two weekend closures will occur on the western side of the interchange:
- From 8pm, Friday, 31 May 2024 to 5am Monday, 3 June 2024
- And from 8pm, Friday, 28 June 2024 to 5am, Monday, 1 July 2024.
During these weekend closures, the western (Rifle Range Road) side of the interchange will be closed. This includes the closure of:
- The northbound on and off-ramps
- Western roundabout area
- M1 overpass bridge, with no east/west connectivity available that weekend
- Rifle Range Road between Bull Road and Waverley Drive.
These works are required to safely install asphalt, kerbing, footings for traffic signals, line marking and associated road construction activities.
What to expect
Motorists
Detours will be in place for motorists. This includes detours for those wanting to:
- Access areas on the western side of the interchange via Coomera (Exit 54), Rifle Range Road and the local road network.
- Access the eastern side of the interchange from the western side via Rifle Range Road heading south to Coomera (Exit 54) and the M1 northbound to Ormeau (Exit 45) and the M1 southbound to Pimpama (Exit 49) off- ramp.
- Heavy vehicles must use Yatala (Exit 38).
Please note:
- There will be no access along Rifle Range Road between Bull Road and Waverley Drive. Motorists should seek an alternative route via the local road network.
- All roads on the eastern side of the interchange, including Yawalpah Road and Attenborough Boulevard, will remain open during the western side closure.
Signage will be in place for motorists (refer detour maps on the following pages).
We apologise for the unavoidable longer than normal travel routes required during these important weekends of road construction works. To minimise delays, please plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
Please note – should inclement weather or other construction conditions cause these works to be postponed, they will move to the next suitable weekend. Check electronic signage along the project alignment for updates or contact the project team.
What’s next – Eastern closure
To create a new signalised intersection, an upcoming weekend closure on the eastern (Yawalpah Road/Attenborough Boulevard) side of the interchange will be required. Further information will be provided closer to the time.
Extension of night works hours to include Friday nights
Background
The Pimpama Interchange (Exit 49) is being upgraded to improve safety and traffic flow efficiency through the interchange.
The two roundabouts either side of the overpass bridges will shortly be removed, making way for signalised intersections.
About the works
Upgrade works generally require dry conditions due to safety requirements and the use of materials such as concrete and asphalt.
Inclement weather in 2023 and continuing into 2024 has caused some unavoidable delays:
- In 2023, a total of 40 working days were lost to wet weather.
- In just the first 4 months of 2024, 36 days of work has been lost due to wet weather.
To make up for this lost time and to progress construction, night works hours will be extended to include Friday nights, when required.
What to expect
From Friday, 24 May until late 2024, the project’s night works hours will be from Sunday to Friday nights from 6pm to 6am.
Day works remain on Monday to Friday and Saturdays when required, 6am to 6pm.
Every effort is being made to minimise impacts to surrounding residents from night works, whenever possible. This includes:
- Carrying out very noisy works like saw cutting (to cut concrete or asphalt) in the earlier part of the shift before 11pm.
- Ensuring temporary site lighting is thoughtfully placed, directed away from nearby properties.
TMR thank you for your continuing patience and understanding and look forward to the exciting changes that lay ahead in the second half of 2024.
It is important to note the scheduled works may change due to weather, contractor and/or site conditions.
